CSS Off Starts Tonight

The second round of CSS OFF starts tonight at midnight CST (which would be 1: 00 AM for us Clevelanders). If you didn’t hear about it already, CSS OFF is a monthly contest to create the best single web page. They give you a .psd and 24 hours, and you have to come up with the best standards-based solution using images, css, and (x)html. I entered in the first contest, and had a great time (here’s my entry). It’s just pure fun. If you win, you can either take $30, or donate $50 to a charity of your choice. The first winner, Dawid Lizak, chose a charity, as I’m sure most will.

I’m on my own tonight, so I’m planning on staying up late and working on it till it’s done. (:

    Looks like fun. I may give it a shot. I see you got a special mention for your hover effects on the date box. I saw you repeated the effect for the merchandise icons above the footer. Nice touch.

    @Brad - Is is fun.

    Re the hover effects, i enjoy using them (see nav above) but the judges actually ruled against me in using them on the merchandise. Their reasoning (and I agree with them after thinking about it for a while) was that products should have their own images, not just background images, so that with css off, the product images still show up.

    That’s the best part of this contest: it helps you concentrate on all that tiny little semantic stuff. (Although the winning entry could use a little semantic help - see here for some thoughts on that)

    I didn’t think about the possible inaccessibility using background images for the products, but that makes sense. I’m going to keep that in mind while I’m designing Little Sorters. I was going to do this month’s CSS Off, but I was absolutely swamped with other things yesterday. I’m definitely planning on trying it out the next time around. Your current entry looks like a sure thing!
